Ever since its inception in 1856, there has been a mystique that has surrounded this simple bronze cross that shows no sign of fading. Indeed, the reverse is true.

As the years pass, so the list of surviving recipients grows ever smaller. Fortunately, also diminishing are the opportunities for fresh medals to be awarded.
